What is the difference between the rapid test and the PCR test?

Both the PCR test and the rapid test show the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The test therefore shows whether you have corona or not, are taken from the throat and nose and the difference comes after the decrease. A PCR test goes to a laboratory, where the genetic material is multiplied. As a result, even small amounts of the virus can make a positive test. And the rapid test is completen at the test location, nothing is multiplied, so there is a possibility that the test is missing very small amounts of the virus. We assume that you are not contagious, but it cannot be ruled out a 100%. A positive test is almost a 100% reliable in both tests.

FAQ about the rapid antigen test:

Answer:

The rapid test detects SARS-CoV-2 antigens. Antigens are proteins of the virus where our immune system can give a reaction to. A rapid test shows you if there are found any antigens in your system by a swab out of your nose. Our test is CR-IVD certified and has been found reliable by the RIVM.

The test result comes with a travel certificate in English. It’s your own responsibility to check if the rapid test is valid to travel with.

  • Sensitivity: 97.1%
  • Specificity: 99,5%

Answer:

You can expect the following of a rapid test:

  • We ask you to blow your nose.
  • Then we first take a swab from your throat. It is important that your mouth is wide open. We may ask you to say “aaa” so that the pharynx is wider.
  • After we take the throat swab, we use the same swab to take a swab in one of the nostrils. For this we ask you to tilt your head back, so that the test stick can enter the nose more easily.
  • The test stick goes deep into the nose. Here we spin it around for a few seconds. You can get tear eyes or start sneezing, that’s normal.
  • At the moment there are also thicker antigen test sticks in circulation than the test sticks we normally use. These test sticks go less deeply into the nose, namely about 2.5 cm.
  • After the throat and nasal swabs have been made, we put the test stick in a tube with liquid.
  • We then drip the liquid onto a test strip. This will indicate within 15 minutes whether you have been tested positive or negative for the coronavirus. You will receive the result in your email within 30 minutes.

Answer:

Yes, the rapid test is reliable. This counts for the CE marked rapid antigen tests that are approved by the RIVM. You are probably not contagious when you have a negative test result but it is never 100% certain.

Answer:

In some cases yes, that is why you will receive an international travel certificate from us. However, a PCR-test is often required. Make sure you carefully check the requirements set by the country in question before you travel.
